Some cell phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card, or Memory Chip that stores subscriber data. The SIM card is issued by a carrier and provides cell service by activating any phone into which it is placed into. A locked phone, however, will only recognize a SIM card from a particular carrier. Meanwhile, an unlocked one recognizes any SIM card from any carrier. The “lock” is a software setting that keeps the cell phone “locked” to one carrier.

When you buy a phone in USA, usually the phone is locked up so it can only work with their carrier, not with other carrier. Carriers claim this is necessary to cover the cost of the phones but I do not believe this is the case since you have to sign a contact in order to receive a free or discounted cell phone from carriers in the first place.

Customers cannot access some of the handsets benefits as the result of the locking done by the carriers. After their contract has ended, people demand to unlocked their cell phone.

One way to get an unlocked cell phone without proprietary settings is to buy it new from a third party vendor in its original, unlocked state. The upside is that the price is commonly close to 60% of retail. Whenever the customers like they can easily upgrade their phone. This is the advantage of the unlocked mobile phone. You may use any carriers’ SIM card and also the service they offer. The advantage is very huge.

And nowadays, the third party companies will ask some money to unlock your phone, since this demand is very high. The proprietary your carriers settings might remain, and this can result to the un-normal work of your phone. I suggest you NOT to hack your own phone, since if you do it improperly, your phone can be rendered unusable.

Carriers that use SIM cards and are on GSM networks include: Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless, and Cell Phone T Mobile.
