Why is the iPod Touch such a popular product, with seemingly little competition? The fact is that it’s an iPod, and that alone makes it stand out. The iPod brand wins out over others any day, in the eyes of most consumers, because of a whole set of factors that are all its own. To put these factors simply, the iPod brand is popular, it is attractive and it is trusted. The last one is perhaps the most important. In a world of ever changing electronics consumers never know what to buy, and so they put their faith in the brand they’ve been told is the best-and the brand that has so far lived up to that claim.

The iPod App Store brings to light a significant factor in the iPod Touch’s popularity. Because of the wide variety of software that consumers can buy, the Touch doesn’t merely compete with MP3 Players like other iPods do. The Touch is actually being seen as competition for handheld gaming devices and PDAs as well.

When it comes to deciding whether to buy the iPod Touch or the iPhone, the first thing to note is that this really is a case about choosing between the two - so long as you want such a device in the first place. Owning both is virtually pointless, unless you really have money to burn and feel like having some extra hard drive space on hand.

Consider the functions of both devices. Drawing the line between them isn’t hard. The iPhone (based on the 3GS) has phone functionality, GPS functionality, a compass, and Bluetooth. It also has a great touch screen, incredible video display, an accelerometer, internet functionality and WiFi. As for the iPod Touch, it has all the latter, but lacks the rest.

When looking at the price, the iPod Touch is only less expensive in theory. The upfront cost is actually about the same. People add to that the contract and the added data fees that iPhone brings with it to justify buying the Touch instead. You’ll likely end up paying for data in the near future anyway with some other phone. As for the contract, the majority of people sign one anyway.

With all of that in mind, consider life with the iPod Touch. You can play the same games as iPhone users, you can watch the same videos and play the same music. If you want to take a picture, you use your camera or your cell. If you want to make a call, use that same cheap cell. If you want to surf the net though? Well, there’s the kicker. But remember the WiFi? WiFi is now available all over the place. Cafes offer it for free, as do bars and restaurants. It’s likely offered in your place of work and, in bigger cities, it’s possibly offered on the sidewalks as well. That means you have internet in almost as many places as the iPhone owners. To take this further, if you want to make a call you can still use your Touch, so long as you are nearby one of those abundant WiFi networks.

With all of that in mind it’s clear why the iPod Touch is the better choice. While people who are in the market for such a device shouldn’t be shy to start shopping around, they shouldn’t be surprised if it’s the Touch that ends up in their cart.

The iPod has revolutionized the way we listen to music. But it’s not just the sound that people are interested in. An iPod can also be a fashion statement, and there are lots of iPod gadgets that can dress up your device. Learn more at Gizmos, Gadgets and Toys.
